58TH ANNUAL ALABAMA DEMOCRATIC CONFERENCE CONVENTION

Quality Leaders for Challenging Times

                                                                                                   

Montgomery, AL Amid a turbulent political landscape, the Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC) convened in Montgomery, Alabama May 19-20th at the Embassy Suites Hotel to equip its membership with tools to advocate for affordable healthcare, quality public education, livable wages and legislation responsive to the needs of black and poor people.

Ryan Haygood, President and CEO of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (NJISJ) was the keynote speaker at the Kennedy-Johnson-King Luncheon on Saturday at 12:30p.m. Before joining NJISJ Haygood, worked for the Legal Defense Fund where he managed the Voting Rights Docket. During the luncheon five Alabamians will receive awards for significantly improving the plight of all people in their communities and across the state of Alabama.

Brewton City Councilman Joseph Watson received the Arthur D. Shores Superior Leadership Award, former Butler County Commissioner George Cook, Opelika Councilwoman Patricia Jones and Coach Eddie Cedric Sherrod of Huntsville received the Lyndon Baines Johnson Political Freedom Award and former ADC Field Director Jerome Gray received the Martin Luther King American Dream Award.

The convention kicked off at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening with a public reception and began Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. with the Q. D. Adams Prayer Breakfast. Rev. Henry Davis, Jr. Pastor of Big Roxanna Missionary Baptist Church was the speaker. Rev. Davis retired from the Montgomery Police Department after 24 years of honorable service at the rank of Major in command of the Special Operations Division.

Participants learned to use technology to deliver the message of the Democratic Party while recruiting quality candidates with the courage and skills to master these challenging times.
